About the Instructor

Joanna Kloet has worked with noncitizens seeking immigration relief throughout nearly her entire career and from several vantage points: government, private practice, and academia.

Ms. Kloet graduated summa cum laude from the Michigan State University College of Law in 2006, where she was an Associate Editor of the Law Review. After graduation, she was hired by the U.S. Department of Justice to the Attorney General's Honors Program, where she worked as an attorney at the Executive Office for Immigration Review. After serving the immigration judges in Denver, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah, she practiced with the Michigan law firm of Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge, where she assisted individuals and businesses with preparing affirmative immigration applications and defenses against immigration-related prosecutions. While at Smith Haughey, Ms. Kloet also dedicated her practice to indigent criminal defense matters, trying felony and misdemeanor cases filed throughout several counties in northern Michigan. She is a former member of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan and a current member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association – Michigan Chapter.

At present, Ms. Kloet supervises law student clinicians at the Immigration Clinic at Michigan State University College of Law in East Lansing, Michigan providing direct representation to the Clinic's general client population, from representation before the Immigration Court and USCIS to legal screenings and Know Your Rights presentations. Ms. Kloet also accepts immigration cases in private practice, regularly counseling noncitizen defendants on the immigration consequences of criminal and civil misconduct.

Currently, Ms. Kloet maintains a focus on the intersection of criminal law and immigration law in her scholarship and practice. She regularly provides immigration training to practitioners of all legal disciplines, as well as non-lawyers such as law enforcement agencies, social service organizations, and other community and academic organizations. Finally, as an adjunct professor of law at the Law College, she created and teaches an upper-level seminar course entitled "Immigration Consequences of Criminal Activity."

Ms. Kloet is fluent in Spanish and was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
